When downloading Office or Windows, you’ll often be asked to choose between 32-bit and 64-bit versions.
What’s the Difference?
| VersionDescription |
32-bit | Older standard, designed for systems with limited RAM (less than 4 GB). Slower performance, limited support for large files or multitasking. |
64-bit | Modern standard. Can use more RAM (4 GB+), faster, and more stable. Recommended for nearly all current systems. |
How to check what your PC supports (Windows)Press Windows + I to open Settings
Go to System > About
Look for System type
If you see something like “64-bit operating system, x64-based processor,” then you should install the 64-bit version.
On Mac
You typically won’t need to choose. Mac installers are usually delivered in a format that matches your system automatically.
What we recommendFor most people, 64-bit is the best option because it performs better and supports more memory.
Choose 32-bit only if:

Your Windows installation is 32-bit (rare on modern devices)
