Upgrading to Windows 10Windows 10 is the more flexible option for older devices and typically works well on many PCs from around 2010 onward. As a general baseline, you’ll want:
At least 2 GB of RAM
Enough free storage (commonly 16–20 GB minimum, more recommended)
A dual-core processor (Intel or AMD)
Windows 10 does not require TPM 2.0 or Secure Boot in the same way Windows 11 does.
If your PC currently runs Windows 7 or 8.1 smoothly, there’s a good chance Windows 10 will run fine too.
Upgrading to Windows 11Windows 11 has stricter requirements. Your system generally needs:
A 64-bit processor with 2+ cores
4 GB of RAM or more
64 GB of storage or more
TPM 2.0
Secure Boot enabled
Many PCs built before roughly 2017 may not meet these requirements without advanced changes.
A simple way to check eligibility is Microsoft’s PC Health Check tool, which can confirm compatibility.
Need help deciding? If your PC is older, Windows 10 is usually the safer choice. If your device is newer and meets Windows 11 requirements, Windows 11 can be a good option.
