# Do I Need an Internet Connection to Activate?

In most cases, yes—an internet connection is needed for activation, though there are a few exceptions depending on the product and edition. Here’s how it typically works.

### 💻 Microsoft Office (2019, 2021, 2024)

**Internet is required for activation**  
Activation is usually completed online and only takes a short moment.

**What happens without internet?**  
You can still install Office, but it will remain inactive until you connect. You may see a warning banner inside apps like Word reminding you to activate.

**One-time activation**  
After activation is completed, Office can be used offline normally in most scenarios.

### 🪟 Windows 10 / 11

**Internet is strongly recommended**  
Online activation is the standard and fastest method.

**Offline or phone activation (less common)**
