Below are the most common causes and the steps that typically resolve it.
Common reasons for this error
This issue often happens when:
The PC’s date or time is incorrect
The internet connection is unstable, restricted, or blocked (firewall/proxy/VPN)
Windows is missing important security components due to outdated updates
Security software is interfering with secure connections
Steps to fix it
Check date and time
Click the clock on the taskbar and confirm the date and time are correct. If needed, go to:
Settings > Time & Language > Date & Time
Enable Set time automatically (and time zone settings if available), then retry activation.
Restart your PC and try again
A restart can refresh the activation attempt and network services.
Install Windows updates
Go to:
Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update
Install any pending updates, especially security and cumulative updates, then restart.
Try a different network
If you’re using a VPN, proxy, or corporate network, switch to another connection (or disable the VPN) and attempt activation again.
Temporarily disable third-party antivirus/firewall (if applicable)
Some security tools can block activation traffic. If you use third-party protection, disable it temporarily, retry activation, and then turn it back on afterward.
