In most cases, this can be resolved with a few straightforward steps.
Why this error happens
This error may appear when:
Windows is trying to use KMS/volume activation, but your key is intended for a different activation type
The activation configuration on the device is not aligned due to previous activation attempts
Activation components are outdated or not syncing correctly
The PC cannot connect to Microsoft’s activation servers at the time of activation
How to fix it
Restart your PC
A restart can clear temporary activation conflicts and refresh the activation request.
Confirm your internet connection
Make sure your device is online and not restricted by a VPN, proxy, or firewall that could block activation.
Enter your key manually (if you haven’t already)
Go to: Settings > System > Activation
Click Change product key
Enter the key you received and confirm.
Optional: Force activation using Command Prompt
If the normal method fails, you can trigger activation manually.
Press Windows + R, type cmd, then right-click and choose Run as administrator.
Run this command to install your key (replace the Xs with your actual key):
slmgr.vbs /ipk XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX
Then run:
slmgr.vbs /ato
This installs the key and attempts online activation directly.
